When Pam Wallace turned her mind to owning a business, she looked for something that would satisfy consumers and provide her with the income stream to support herself.

What she found was Hand Stone , the membership-based massage and facial spa franchise that is broadening its appeal across the country.

In the next few weeks, Wallace will open Connecticut’s first Hand Stone location at Ridgeway Shopping Center in Stamford. The spa opened 14 franchises in 2010, 28 in 2011 and plans to initiate 45 more in 2012.

“I wanted something that was going to be a very big value for the consumer,” Wallace said. “And I was very impressed with Hand Stone: their professionalism, their thoroughness, their emphasis on customer experience and their respect for their employees.”

Hand Stone, launched in 2005, will bring its massage, facial and waxing services to a range of customers, including those who might not think of treating themselves to a spa or only view it as an occasional luxury.

Like Massage Envy, another spa franchise with area branches, Hand Stone has a membership system that allows members to come for spa treatments at reduced prices. Called the “Lifestyle Program,” it offers a therapeutic massage or facial once a month for a single rate. Hand Stone offers its services on a nonmembership basis, as well.
